Having one of the best dishwashers on the market will save you money and water in the long run. And you’ll have more time at your disposal to focus on doing the things you love instead of washing dishes by hand. If you’ve never owned a dishwasher before, you don’t know what you’re missing out on. Statistically speaking, loading a dishwasher and turning it on can save you up to 230 hours a year that you would otherwise waste doing one of the simplest household tasks. And this is an official statistic made by Energy Star.

Why do you need dishwashers?
In this best dishwasher buying guide, we’ll focus on the benefits of having a dishwasher, what specs to look for, and how to choose the best dishwasher for your specific needs.
Dishwashers are guest-friendly
If you like throwing dinner parties, having a dishwasher will make your life much easier. A dishwasher will help you maintain a clean-looking kitchen and you’ll be able to deal with clutter more easily.
You’ll be able to throw a large party at home without worrying about washing the dishes later on. And guests that like helping out will also have less to worry about, as they can just scrap food remains off their plate and place it in the dishwasher instead of washing some of the dishes themselves.
The best dishwashers save time
The average American spends about 230 hours per year washing dishes by hand. That’s almost ten days that you waste doing something as simple as washing dishes. In 2020, washing dishes by hand is no longer standard. Even the most expensive dishwashers on the market have become affordable for most Americans.
Some dishwashers can handle hard water with ease
If you have problems with hard water, like 80% of Americans do, getting a dishwasher with an integrated water softener is worth considering.
Dealing with hard water on your skin can irritate it in the long run. By letting a dishwasher with an integrated water softener do its thing, you won’t have to deal with this issue any longer.
The best dishwashers save money in the long run
Some people might still find the prices of dishwashers too high.
However, you need to look at a dishwasher the same way you would look at a long-term investment.
Most dishwashers will last about 8 years, while some of the better ones can last even up to 15 years. Modern dishwashers can cut your utility bills by more than $40 per year.
Even if your dishwasher only lasts a minimum of 8 years, that still means you’re going to save $320. Add to that the time saved, and you will quickly realize that the return on investment is more substantial than you would’ve thought initially.
The best dishwashers sanitize dishes more efficiently than any human can
Dishwashers run at temperatures ranging from 130-170 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s much more than your skin can withstand.
Most humans barely resist at 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Needless to say, the higher the temperature, the higher the chances of killing bacteria and other pathogens.
This is even more important if you don’t own a water filter because there are many pathogens lurking inside tap water. So, in conclusion, having one of the best dishwashers guarantees you’ll stay a little healthier.
Basic specifications to look for when choosing a dishwasher
When searching for a reliable dishwasher, you’ll have to look for specs that match your needs.
Load capacity/place settings
Think about how many dishes you need to wash regularly. If you live by yourself or with only two other people, you probably don’t need a high capacity dishwasher. However, if you have a large family, or if you run a restaurant, you’re going to want a higher capacity dishwasher with a third rack.
Wash cycles
Most dishwashers feature multiple wash cycles to choose from. The most important ones to consider are light cycle, economy cycle, regular wash, hard wash, and separate drying cycles.
The light wash cycle works best for fragile dishes, such as glassware. This cycle’s gentle spray ensures that your dishes and cups won’t tip over when the dishwasher is running.
The economy cycle (or eco mode on some models) uses less water and electricity to help the environment. Your dishwasher will skip heating and the cycle lasts longer than the regular one, so it’s only recommended for less dirty dishes.
Regular washing is the primary mode of all dishwashers. It usually lasts for about two hours and is the best setting in most scenarios. For the average dish load, this might be the best option since you won’t have to bother with deciphering what the other cycles do.
The hard wash setting is best-suited for pots and pans. It’s also designed for extremely dirty dishes, or even food remains if your dishwasher can handle them. Not all dishwashers can withstand food bits getting into their innards, so check for this when purchasing one.
The drying cycles are usually regulated by the wash cycle that you choose. However, in most cases, you can set these up separately. The extra dry feature is especially important if you’re washing plastics. Air dry modes are more economical, though you won’t get the same results that you get from standard drying cycles.
Noise level
While certain people may not care about the noise a dishwasher makes, your neighbors might be bothered if your dishwasher is too loud. With that said, you should also take this into consideration when reading relevant dishwasher reviews.
- A whisper is around 15 decibels
- Ambient sounds in a library are usually around 40 decibels.
- Typical conversations usually fall around the 60-decibel mark
- A lawnmower produces around 90 decibels.
Hopefully, you can now tell how loud you can afford your dishwasher to be before purchasing it.
Size and weight
Depending on how much space you have inside your home, you might want to consider more portable options. Further down the article, you will find the different types of dishwashers so you will be able to determine what to look for.
Want to learn how to measure for a new dishwasher?
If you think you don’t have enough space, it might be worth considering a portable or countertop dishwasher.
Utensil rack/basket
Utensil racks and baskets are essential for getting forks, spoons, and other cooking tools inside the dishwasher without affecting the space available for dishes.
Features that don’t necessarily add value
As a rule of thumb, the price of a dishwasher increases when you add more features. If you’re on a tight budget or if you simply like spending money wisely, you might want to skip on the following features, as they are not necessarily useful. Some of them even increase operational costs.
Automatic detergent dispenser
While you might be uncertain of how much detergent to use in specific scenarios, you’ll quickly get the hang of it in no time. Automatic detergent dispensers are expensive to repair and can break easily. Instead, you could just read the dishwasher manual or the detergent packaging and figure it out on your own.
“Smart” features
You still need to get up, put your dishes, silverware, and glassware inside the dishwasher anyway. And you still need to get up and take them out once the cleaning and drying cycles are over.
Why spend more than $200 over the initial price of a dishwasher when you could save that money to buy other useful appliances, detergent, or invest it in something that actually makes your life much easier?
A sanitation cycle
The NSF certification on a dishwasher increases water heat to more than 150 degrees Fahrenheit and extends the regular wash time by up to 18 more minutes.
While it might sound highly beneficial, the truth is that conventional dishwasher sanitization processes are already good enough. Regular wash cycles already heat water up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Those extra ten degrees and a couple of minutes of spare washing time barely achieve anything in return. The only real difference will be noticeable on your energy bill.
Rinse cycle
The Environmental Protection Agency considers that scraping is better than rinsing for the environment. Having a rinse cycle adds barely any value to the dishwasher. If you really want to, you can just rinse dishes on your own using the faucet found on your kitchen sink and then slide the plates inside the dishwasher.
Types of dishwashers
Built-in dishwashers
Built-in dishwashers are the ones that fit inside a kitchen cabinet. They typically come with multiple spray arms, wash cycles, and smart a smart targeting system that detects dirty surfaces and focuses more on them.
Built-in dishwashers provide a neat, stylish look that many people prefer. They fit right in with your furniture and, as a result, don’t take up much space when compared to higher capacity models.
Freestanding dishwashers
Freestanding dishwashers are a stand-alone unit that can be placed anywhere as long as you have enough space. They connect to your plumbing system the same way that built-in dishwashers do. You can also place freestanding dishwashers under the counter, as long as the counter itself is tall enough.
Usually, freestanding dishwashers also have a higher capacity than other models. It’s also important to note that most high-end dishwashers are freestanding.
Drawer dishwashers
Just as their name suggests, drawer dishwashers fit inside kitchen drawers. You can find both single-drawer and double-drawer dishwasher models. Although they might seem small at first, many units out there have an impressive load capacity for their size.
While they may not perform as well as other types of dishwashers, they generally still do a more than decent job. Some high-tech features can also be found in their builds, such as intelligent spray arms and advanced wash cycles.
Portable dishwashers
Portable dishwashers are convenient and affordable, especially if you live in a small apartment. They’re great for people who move out constantly, or for people living in RVs. The best portable dishwashers can easily fit on countertops or even on a table.
Countertop dishwashers
Countertop dishwashers are small and fairly cheap compared to other types of dishwashers. For this reason, they are highly popular among people who can’t afford rent inside big apartments. They offer you a compact and affordable cleaning solution if you live in a small apartment.
Some of the best countertop dishwashers usually go for less than $300. That’s way less than the monthly rent payment for living inside a big city, such as Los Angeles or New York.
How to install a dishwasher
For a plumber or an expert DIYer, installing a dishwasher only takes a few hours and some basic tools. If you’re replacing an old dishwasher, you’ll have one less thing to worry about, since you probably already have a compatible drain hose, and you don’t need to worry about where to install the new model.
However, if it’s the first time you’re installing a dishwasher, things might be slightly more complicated. You’re going to have to measure the space where you want to fix it and make sure that the dishwasher door won’t be blocked by any obstacles, as we mentioned above in the specs category.
Before installation
Every dishwasher is slightly different, and you’ll have to consult the user manual to determine the best course of action. In this guide, we’ll be focusing on the basic parameters of installing a full-fledged dishwasher. Countertops and portable dishwashers can usually connect to the tap without any tools, so we won’t be talking about those.
Basic plumbing and electrical hook-ups
Most dishwashers will require a 120-volt receptacle to work correctly. The most convenient location to have your outlet is the back of the cabinet below the sink. If you don’t have an outlet there, you will need a power cord extender.
Next, you’ll need to connect the dishwasher to the hot water supply. Most connections require a 3/8-inch diameter tube and a dual outlet shutoff valve. The dishwasher will drain water through a hose that you’ll need to connect the sink’s drain trap.
If this is the first time you’re installing a dishwasher, you might need to get a dishwasher tailpiece in case the dishwasher you’ve purchased doesn’t already come with one. You will then need to replace your sink’s tailpiece with the dishwasher one and connect the dishwasher hose to it.
Dishwasher air gap – what’s it for?
If you want to connect your dishwasher drain to a garbage disposal system instead of the sink’s drain for whatever reason, keep in mind that many states and counties have building codes that force you to purchase a dishwasher air gap.
Even without the regulations, we still recommend getting one because it will prevent waste water from flowing back into your dishwasher. It’s a necessary extra step if you absolutely need to connect to a garbage disposal drain.
The following video will show you how to install a dishwasher air gap in case you need it.
Removing the old dishwasher
STEP 1
The first step to removing your old dishwasher is to unplug it from the power source.
STEP 2
Next, turn off the water feed and unscrew the water pipe from the valve. To prevent any leaks on the floor, place a bucket underneath the valve while you’re working on it. Once you break the seal, excess water might start spraying all over the place.
STEP 3
Now remove the drainpipe by disconnecting it from the drain or waste disposal system. Simply unscrew the metal clamp and pry the pipe off. You’ll now have to remove the kick plate – it’s the thing that covers the space underneath the dishwasher door. If your old dishwasher has the power and water connections at the front, remove both.
STEP 4
Open the dishwasher door and look for screws on the edges of the frame. These are meant to hold the dishwasher in place when it’s in use. They act as anchor points that keep it stuck to your cabinet, so you’ll have to remove them. You might also find anchor points at the top of the dishwasher door, so make sure to unscrew those as well.
STEP 5
Now you’re almost ready to take the old dishwasher out. Place a piece of cardboard in front of it to protect your floor from scratches while you’re removing the dishwasher. Don’t try to pull it by the door handle. Instead, open the door, place one hand on the bottom of the tub, and one on top, and then gently pull the entire thing out.
STEP 6
Be careful not to tangle or rip the cables that are still connected to the dishwasher while you’re doing this. Push the cables through the hole in the cabinet if they seem to keep the dishwasher in place. Once you’ve pulled the dishwasher out completely, you’ll be able to disconnect the rear water and power cables.
Note: Even if you’ll put back the same dishwasher after a repair, it is generally a good idea to replace the old cables and pipes because they’ve probably also degraded over time.
Installing the new dishwasher
If the delivery people didn’t already take care of this process, you’ll first have to unpack the dishwasher. Dishwashers usually come packed in a cardboard box with a wood or plastic base at the bottom that is meant to protect the dishwasher’s fragile bits during shipping.
Sometimes, the dishwasher might even have bolts that keep it attached to the base. Once you’ve removed the straps and taken the cardboard box off, remove those bolts and lift the dishwasher off the plate. Don’t drag the dishwasher, as it might damage the bits that the base was protecting.
Also, don’t throw away the box, the base, or the bolts. You might need them later to send the dishwasher to the repair center. If your dishwasher comes with the kick plate already installed, you’ll need to remove it because you might have to get under the dishwasher later during the installation process.
Now open the door to make sure the latch is working correctly. Don’t go into a frenzy to unpack the racks just yet, though. Otherwise, you will rattle them during installation and possibly break the racks’ tines or even crack the dishwasher door in some cases.
Next, put the dishwasher in front of the space where you’ll want it installed, but don’t push it in yet. Leave enough room for you to work behind the dishwasher.
Routing the pipes and cables
Now comes the hard part: solving the plumbing matter that we talked about earlier.
Push the water and power cables through the hole in the cabinet space that feeds towards the power and water connections. Push the drain pipe through the same hole, but don’t connect anything to the dishwasher just yet.
Now comes the tricky part that differentiates dishwashers from one another. Some have the water and power connections on the back of the dishwasher body, while others have the same connections on the front. When it comes to this part, it is generally better to just follow the manual rather than a universal guide.
If your dishwasher has the connections on the back, you should connect the water and power connectors before pushing the dishwasher in. If your dishwasher has these connections on the front, you should first push the dishwasher in and connect the power and water cables afterward.
Setting up the connections
There are three connections to take care of when installing a dishwasher: power line, water supply line, and drain line.
The power line is probably the simplest because it doesn’t require any plumbing skills whatsoever. After you’ve organized the cables, just connect the dishwasher to the power outlet, and you’re done.
The water supply line is yet again straightforward if you’ve already taken care of the inlet and shutoff valves. Connect the supply tube to the water inlet valve on the dishwasher and a shutoff valve on a hot-water supply pipe. Your instruction manual should point to exactly where on the dishwasher the supply tube is located so that it won’t be hard. Thread the coupling nut of the supply tube onto the dishwasher 90 fitting, and tighten with channel-lock pliers or an adjustable wrench. Just don’t overtighten it.
The drain line should be as equally simple to connect now that you’ve figured out the other two. Connect the hose to the drain tap under your sink or to the air gap fitting that you’ve attached to your garbage disposal system like you just saw on the video above.
Put the dishwasher in place
It’s now time to take care of the final steps: pushing the dishwasher inside the cabinet and making sure everything works.
Just lift the front slightly and slowly push the dishwasher into the cabinet while making sure that you’re not damaging any of the cables and pipes. Also, pay attention so that none of the cladding that covers the dishwasher body or the cables is caught on the edges of the space.
It’s a good idea to have a friend help you with this process. The other person should pull the pipes and cables through the hole, so they don’t get tangled behind the dishwasher.
Make sure that the dishwasher is adequately leveled by using a bubble level to measure the front of the dishwasher interior from left to right. Next, hold the same level against the front edge of the dishwasher. You should adjust both feet so that the entirety of the dishwasher is appropriately leveled. This makes sure that the water can drain properly.
Now secure the dishwasher in place by drilling small holes through the wood in the cabinet where the dishwasher’s anchor points are located. Put the included screws through these holes and screw them into the anchor points to keep the dishwasher from wobbling when it’s in use.
The final test
If you’ve done everything correctly and checked the manual to make sure that each step was adequately taken for your particular model, everything should be in order.
You can now open the dishwasher door and install the racks and baskets. Check that the mechanism is working correctly and that all the tines are not damaged.
Now it’s time to test everything out. Turn the water on and check under the dishwasher to see if there are any leaks. Leave the water on for a few minutes just to be sure, so you won’t have any surprises down the line.
If more than ten minutes have passed and the floor looks clean, it’s safe to assume that you can now put the kick plate back on.
Next, run a regular wash cycle without adding any dishes or detergent and let it do its thing. Check to see if the water flows without any hiccups and if it drains correctly.
Congratulations! You now have a brand new, fully-functioning dishwasher!
How to use a dishwasher in 5 simple steps
No matter how resilient your dishwasher might be, it won’t be able to clean dishes properly unless you take good care of it and load dishes correctly.
Not many things are worse than opening the dishwasher’s door after the cleaning cycle is complete only to find that your dishes are almost as dirty as you’ve left them.
To make using your dishwasher as easy as possible, we’ve created this comprehensive and straightforward guide on adequately loading and using your dishwasher.
Pre-rinsing is optional
If you have an older dishwasher, you might be used to rinse your dishes before loading them in. Modern dishwashers don’t require this step unless you plan on leaving your dishes inside for some time before pushing the start button. But if you’re running a cycle right away, just scrape off the food and leave it at that.
A few tips to keep in mind before loading the dishwashers
- Make sure plastics sit tightly in place.
- Don’t stack items. You’ll make it impossible for the spray hands to reach their target.
- Separate the silverware and stainless steel items. The two don’t mix well together when washed.
Load bowls and plates on the bottom rack
Something that a surprising number of people get wrong is precisely the first step of loading a dishwasher.
You should load bowls, plates, pots, casseroles, and pans on the bottom rack of the dishwasher. Place them at a slight angle to ensure that the spray arms reach the entire surface of your dishes.
Flat pans and platters should also go on the bottom rack. Tuck them along the sides and back of the rack, never in front of the dishwasher door. Why? Because they might block the detergent dispenser, and it won’t be able to release the cleaning agent inside the dishwasher.
Utensils go into the basket
We recommend placing some handles up and some down when putting utensils together. This will ensure that water and detergent get sprayed properly on all spoons, forks, knives, etc. and sanitize them as much as possible.
Speaking of knives, you should place their handles up so that you won’t cut yourself when loading and unloading the dishwasher.
The top rack is for glasses and cups
Finally, put cups and glasses on the top rack of your dishwasher. Make sure to place them between the tines (those little prongs), instead of on top of them.
Like with plates and bowls, make sure to angle glasses and cups slightly. If you have wine glasses, you should secure them using the latches on the side of the tray. Don’t allow them to stick to each other during the wash cycles, as they are fragile and might break.
Fair warning: if you have expensive wine glasses, you’re far safer washing them by hand and sanitizing them with alcohol.
Best dishwasher brands
Purchasing a dishwasher from a trustworthy brand puts your mind at ease, knowing that you’re buying from a reputable company. However, there are also lesser-known dishwasher brands that have emerged during the past couple of years and manage to put out some quality dishwashers on the market.
Bosch
Bosch dishwashers are probably the most silent on the American market. This brand has several dishwasher series that fall into different categories and price ranges.
What is the difference between Bosch 300, 500, and 800 series dishwashers?
The way Bosch names their products isn’t the friendliest by a long shot. You’d think that the higher the number means better quality overall.
While to some extent this is true, it’s not always the case. For example, SHXM63WS5N and SHPM65W55N, are from different series and yet they still share quite many similarities – even the confusing the numbers.
First, the things they have in common: you can mount all three dishwasher series flush with cabinetry for a built-in look. Also, they have the same detergent dispenser that’s designed for tablets, as well as using the same washing system. The only real differences are the price and the added features that tend to be more for show than actual practicality the more expensive the models get.
The 300 series has a feature that the others don’t, while still keeping the price range to an acceptable level – integrated water softener. This prevents the mineral build-up that you often see on your dishes if you have hard water.
The 500 series features an adjustable third rack with barely anything else useful added into the mix. As for the 800 series, they have touch-sensitive buttons, and the more expensive models have started adding in a water softener and smartphone connectivity.
EdgeStar
EdgeStar is a home appliances brand that makes highly affordable dishwashers. One of the main reasons why this brand is so loved by many is that their customer support is reliable and solves issues quickly most of the time.
They launched in 2004, while other brands have been on the dishwashing scene for far longer. In a relatively short time compared to other giants on the market, EdgeStar has managed to make an impactful name for itself.
SPT (Sunpertown)
Despite not having as many models as other companies, what SPT has on offer place it in the top-tier affordable dishwasher brand category.
Unlike the products from China, which get a bad rep, this Taiwanese manufacturer stretches out its engineering skills to the max to build reliable dishwashers. We hope to see more dishwasher models from this brand in the near future.
Danby
Danby has built some reliable, sturdy, and affordable dishwashers over the years. Founded in 1947, this brand began its journey in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The brand prides itself on creating appliances that fit inside any apartment. And their dishwasher division is no different.
Some of their best countertop dishwashers have made our lists of the best dishwashers in the past, and if they continue putting out quality products like these, we will most likely review them in the future as well.
Fisher & Paykel
Fisher & Paykel are, as of April 2020, the only brand that manufactures drawer-style dishwashers. This innovative approach to designing and engineering dishwashers has put them on top of many people’s favorite dishwasher brands.
All of their models can clean dishes at temperatures between 100°F and 160°F. The high heat breaks down oils and eliminates pathogens with ease. Despite the size of their drawer dishwashers, the units are quiet, efficient, and configurable to allow stacking to fit your needs. On top of that, they also usually offer three different look styles that suit any kitchen.
Miele
Since 1989, Miele has brought German craftsmanship to the frontline of appliances. The company has gained global recognition for its quiet and efficient dishwashers. Their product design is yet another feature that sets them apart from the competition.
Miele dishwashers provide excellent results with low energy consumption. On top of all that, Miele offers excellent customer service, with users worldwide praising their fast response times and quick solutions to problems.
LG
When it comes to their dishwasher division, LG has become the official Energy Star 2020 partner of the year. They offer two types of dishwashers: front control and top control dishwashers. LG has also won the J.D. Power Award for the highest customer satisfaction with dishwashers.
For these reasons and many more, we consider LG dishwashers to be a worthy option for people who want to conserve energy, protect the environment, and get squeaky-clean dishes all at the same time.
Whirlpool
Whirlpool dishwashers are reliable and generally come at reasonable prices for what they offer. Whirlpool’s dishwashers are generally priced below the $700 mark. And they still manage to distinguish themselves from other dishwasher brands through a few noticeable features.
Whirlpool’s patented TotalCoverage Spray Arm features 21 nozzles to ensure that every dish is adequately rinsed and cleaned. This gives their dishwashers more chances of cleaning every single spot on pots, pans, plates, and cups than dishwashers with regular spraying arms.
Electrolux
Electrolux dishwashers set themselves apart through an unconventional AirDry technology. At the end of a regular washing cycle, the Electrolux dishwashers that feature this technology open the door automatically by 3 inches to allow for improved airflow.
Furthermore, they have LED lights that project the remaining time of a washing cycle on the floor. It’s discreet yet visible enough to allow you to plan the next dishwashing cycle accordingly.
Amana
Many of the Amana dishwashers currently on the market feature a triple filtering technology. The triple filter eases your work even further when cleaning dishes. It allows you to skip pre-rinsing and even scrubbing without worrying about blockages further down the line.
On top of that, some of their more premium models even offer heated drying, high-temperature wash, and even a one-hour wash cycle.

How to clean a dishwasher
You probably think that your dishwasher cleans itself. After all, you’re constantly running hot water and detergent through it. Sadly, that isn’t the case. From time to time, you’ll have to get down. and dirty by cleaning your dishwasher.
You might think that cleaning your dishwasher is cumbersome and time-consuming. Far from it. Cleaning your dishwasher requires five simple steps.
Remove bits of food
While certain dishwashers have a food disposal feature, some food remains can still get stuck in the interior. To avoid having to deal with hardened food bits later down the line, make a habit of clearing out remaining food bits every time after you’ve taken out the dishes from the dishwasher.
Pull out the bottom rack and look for any food bits. Then use a paper towel to pick them up and throw them in the trash bin. Doing so will also prevent the buildup of nasty odors over time.
Wipe away door grime on a weekly basis
The edges and interior of the dishwasher door can form grime quite quickly because of the constant use of water.
Get a damp sponge or cloth and wipe away the interior and edges of the door to avoid nasty buildup over time. While you’re at it, clean the handle and the exterior of the door to remove dust and give your dishwasher a sleeker look.
Clean the filter
Obviously, one of the most important parts of a dishwasher is the filter. Without it, nothing else will work as intended. If you use the dishwasher daily, we recommend cleaning the filter every other week. Do this by removing the racks and looking below the bottom spray arm.
Take the filter out and rinse it with hot or warm water. Scrub the screen and plastic frame with a toothbrush. This should remove grease, oil, and food particles stuck on the filter.
After you’re done, just lock the filter back in place and reassemble the racks. If you’re not sure how to remove and put the filter back on your particular dishwasher unit, the owner’s manual should have a step-by-step guide for this.
Give the dishwasher a deep clean every other month
Deep clean? This sounds cumbersome, right? Not exactly.
You have two options:
- get dishwasher cleaner tablets that will do the job for you
- do it yourself
If you want to go for the DIY approach, place two cups of distilled vinegar inside the dishwasher, and run a normal cleaning cycle without adding any detergent or dishes.
Optional: polish the exterior
Having a clean-looking dishwasher can make your kitchen shine. Appliance surfaces are true fingerprint magnets, especially if we’re talking about stainless steel.
To get rid of fingerprints and make your stainless steel dishwasher look as attractive as if it was brand new, we recommend using a stainless steel cleaner.
The ingredients found in stainless steel cleaners will also prevent dust from building up as easily. And they’re far better than abrasive cleaners because they won’t leave any scratches or marks.
How to troubleshoot common dishwasher problems and other questions
In case your dishwasher malfunctions or doesn’t seem to work correctly, you might sometimes be able to fix the problem yourself without having to take it to a repair shop.
We’re going to go through the most common problems your dishwasher might encounter and give you basic fixes for them. If the fixes don’t work, you should call in a maintenance specialist or take it into service.
My dishwasher won’t run
If the power is on, the door is latched, and the control is engaged, but nothing seems to light up, it’s worth first checking to see if the power outlet isn’t broken.
Check to see if the outlet is a GFCI receptacle with a reset button. If the box has a reset button, push the reset. If it is a regular outlet, try plugging in a different appliance and see it if it works then.
You can also check the electrical panel to see if a fuse hasn’t broken in the meantime. You might have a tripped circuit, case in which you’ll want to switch the breaker off and on again.
Finally, if the dishwasher display engages, but it still refuses to run, you might be dealing with a defective door sensor. Turn off the dishwasher and adjust the door latch’s strike slightly, using a screwdriver.
My dishwasher won’t fill
First, make sure the water supply is on and working properly. Then turn off the dishwasher and let it cool for a few minutes. Lift the float mechanism and clean around the float tube. Rinse the float and put it back in. Finally, check to see if the water inlet valve hasn’t become dirty. If it’s dirty, just disassemble and clean it.
My dishwasher keeps filling up
This problem usually occurs because of a faulty float switch or inlet valve. Unplug the dishwasher, and lift the plastic float switch. Scrub the stem clean and put the switch back in place. Now test the inlet valve to see if it’s clean and works properly. If not, you’re going to need to replace it.
My dishwasher broke and I have to manually wash my dishes. What do you recommend?
We recommend getting a quality manual dish detergent to get the job done. Pour it on a sponge, brush, or directly on the rinsed surface of your dishes, and scrub thoroughly. It may not be as easy as letting a dishwasher do the job, but it’s your best option until you get it repaired.
Why does my dishwasher stay wet inside?
All dishwashers will have some condensation, and it is generally not that much of a big concern. If properly installed, you should be able to get rid of the excess water with a vented or heated drying cycle. If the problem seems to persist, check for a leaking seal or if you’ve installed the dishwasher correctly. In case you can’t figure this out on your own, don’t hesitate to contact customer support or an expert in dishwashers and plumbing.
Can you run bleach through your dishwasher?
If mold and mildew have formed inside your dishwasher, bleach is an excellent option to use, as long as your dishwasher DOESN’T have a stainless steel interior. Just add half a cup of bleach inside the dishwasher and run a regular washing cycle without detergent and dishes inside.
Why is my dishwasher door not closing?
Before panicking, make sure that the dishes are not protruding out of the rack and keep the door from shutting. Another simple fix could be that the dishwasher door is hitting the installation cabinet or the screws holding it in place. If none of these is the issue, other serious problems might be at play.
How to fix dishwasher door latch
First, troubleshoot the dishwasher door latch to see if it’s the main culprit. Turn off the water supply and insert an object of similar size into the latch. Sometimes food particles or other foreign debris can become wedged inside, making it hard to open or close. If it appears to be dirty, try to clean it.
On some models, the latch will get its rotating movement from a pivot pin in an area where the dirt can accumulate and impede the movement or interfere with it. Use an industrial cleaner and then a lubricator like WD-40 and see if this works.
Check the strike plate
If the strike plate appears bent or misaligned, you may have to remove it and straighten it back with the proper tools. While disassembling the strike plate, you can also try to close the door and see where the strike point of the latch gets hit so that you can further figure out what the problem is.
See if the dishwasher door gasket (seal) is broken
The dishwasher gasket has one purpose: to keep the dishwasher from leaking all over the floor when it’s running. Unfortunately, this, too, is also prone to wear and tear. If this gasket is ripped, worn, not aligned, or indented, it should be replaced, as the gasket can make it, so the dishwasher door doesn’t close properly.
Is the dishwasher door hinge at fault?
If the dishwasher door hinges are bent or loose, then the door cannot close properly. Sadly, attempting to fix these is often more trouble than it’s worth, so if the hinges are the problem, you’re going to need them replaced.
Check the dishwasher door spring
One final problem that can cause the dishwasher door not to close properly is the door spring. Check to see if it works properly, if it has enough elasticity and lubrication, and if it’s not damaged. Sadly, if this is the problem, it’s one of those things that need replacing, as you can’t fix it.

- Dishwasher door latch

Why does my dishwasher not dry dishes?
More often than not, this is usually a problem located at the heating element. If you wash dishes often, the dishwasher’s thermostat might prevent the heating cycle to function properly because it is incorrectly assuming that your heat element might set itself on fire. Usually, this problem can be fixed through warranty or simply by scheduling the dishwasher less often than on a daily basis.
